Hear Bob Dylan Unveil John Mellencamp Cover In Indianapolis

Bob Dylan’s Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour rolled through Indianapolis on Monday, the first of two shows at the Murat Theatre. The legendary singer-songwriter continued to add geographically-appropriate songs to his setlist on the fall trek with a cover from Indiana’s own John Mellencamp.

After making a surprise appearance at the Mellencamp co-founded Farm Aid earlier in October, Dylan kicked off his fall tour in Kansas City where he broke out the Leiber-Stoller classic “Kansas City” for the first time in 37 years. Next, Bob honored rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry in his hometown of St. Louis. Dylan then paid homage to blues greats Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf in Chicago.

In Indianapolis — about an hour north of John’s hometown of Seymour, Indiana — Bob premiered Mellencamp’s “Longest Days.” The song opens Mellencamp’s 2008 album Life, Death, Love and Freedom. Listen to Dylan debut “Longest Days” below:

Other than the Mellencamp unveiling, Bob stuck close to his Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour setlist, performing nine of the 10 tracks on the 2020 album. After opening with “Watching The River Flow,” the singer-songwriter included more classics “Most Likely You Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine,” “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” and “Gotta Serve Somebody.”

Following the Mellencamp debut, Dylan also delivered a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Truckin’” ahead of closing the set with Rough and Rowdy Ways’ “Every Grain Of Sand,” which saw Bob on his trademark harmonica.
