John Mayer made the rounds on late night TV to promote his upcoming fall solo tour dates, stopping by to visit his friends Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live. The genre-defying rock star answered a fan’s question about the future of Dead & Company, performed live on air, shared a comedy bit he wrote for The Tonight Show while under the influence of an “adult Fruit Chew,” and more.
Mayer first appeared on Watch What Happens Live, where a fan asked what the chances are that he’ll play with Dead & Company again in the future following the recent end of the band’s Final Tour. Mayer replied, “We will play shows. I have to believe that we love this music so much we’re going to play shows, we just are trying to figure out what that looks like for the future, but everyone has it in their hearts to keep playing,” to which Cohen replied, “Two weeks at The Sphere! Call Irving Azoff.” Mayer also discussed his music catalog, his least favorite album, and red carpet looks, and he participated in the show’s “Pillow Talk” segment.

Next Mayer stopped by The Tonight Show to celebrate the show’s return as both guest and musical guest. He performed Sob Rock track “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” live and sat down for an extended interview during which host Jimmy Fallon asked about an idea for a skit he had received from Mayer via Andy Cohen. Mayer explained:
I was up late at night enjoying an adult Fruit Chew, let’s say. And I have all these ideas, and there’s a part of my brain that doesn’t tell me that those ideas aren’t good, and they tell me that I should share them with everyone all the time. And I wrote a bit for a commercial for the show, and I sent it to our dear friend Andy Cohen, just so confident it was great. “Send this to Jimmy, please. Will you send it to Jimmy?” And the bit was [about] a product called ‘Crypto Bismol,’ and it’s for the stomach cramps associated with the fluctuating price of bitcoin. “He’s gonna love it!” And I never heard another thing about it until you fully produced the commercial.

In the same interview clip, Fallon asked about when Questlove, drummer of the show’s house band, sat in with Mayer at Madison Square Garden last year. After Mayer sang his praises, commending him for learning six songs on the way to performing them at the World’s Most Famous Arena and knocking it out of the park, Questlove admitted he too was under the influence of an “adult Fruit Chew” at the time. “It was the most exhilarating night of my life,” he said before adding, “’cause I don’t know how I got through it.”
Mayer also discussed his new SiriusXM channel, Life With John Mayer, which supplies music specifically curated for each part of the day. “The idea is a radio channel on Sirius that isn’t genre-based, but plays music for whatever moment you’re most likely to be in … so if you’re waking up in the morning and you’re on the way to work and you turn it on, it’s gonna be high-energy go-to-work music. If you’re at work, it’s already sort of meeting you where you are in the moment. Friday nights, going-out music. … And I’ll be like, “Hey. What’s up? You’re listening to ‘Life with John Mayer.’ You guys are doing great. Keep it up.”
