The Rolling Stones‘ Keith Richards appeared on the latest episode of The Howard Stern Show. The legendary guitarist talked writing Stones hits, how the band’s new album Hackney Diamonds got its name and the band’s late drummer Charlie Watts.
On writing “Satisfaction,” Stern noted that Paul Simon said in his recent-interview to listen to the bass line, which is brilliant, as Richards agreed. “That’s Bill Wyman, man.”
Keith’s riff is no slouch either but the guitarist said that it was just a “sketch” for a horn part that never materialized. “[Rolling Stones producer] Andrew Oldham said, ‘This will do bubba,’” Keith recalled on how the greatest rock ‘n’ roll riffs of all time didn’t become a horn line. Watch the clip on “Satisfaction” below.
Richards also talked about how his grandfather Gus taught him guitar, which led into a discussion on teaming with Mick Jagger and still playing guitar everyday.
Keith also remembered longtime Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away on August 24, 2021.
“He had feel. He had intelligence,” Richards said. “Rock ‘n’ roll doesn’t necessarily need the whole battery of drums. It’s got to do with when to not hit. If you’re making music, silence is your canvas.”
See Keith remember Charlie below.
Additionally, Richards revealed how The Rolling Stones new album Hackney Diamonds got its name, “the title took longer than the record man,” and spoke about how the band got its iconic name.
