The Adam Deitch Quartet returns with their forthcoming sophomore studio album, Roll The Tape, via the drummer’s Golden Wolf Records label on November 10. Deitch’s soul-jazz ensemble recently previewed the LP by sharing “Play On Playa,” a song written and recorded in tribute to Soulive.

Drummer Adam Deitch is joined in the Adam Deitch Quartet by Lettuce bandmates Eric ‘Benny’ Bloom on trumpet and Ryan Zoidis on saxophone as well as organist Wil Blades. The 10-track Roll The Tape came together when Deitch flew in Blades to accompany him, Bloom and Zoidis for sessions held at Colorado’s Scanhope Sound shortly after Lettuce finished work on their next studio album.

Adam Deitch wrote the material featured on the follow-up to the outfit’s 2019 debut album, Egyptian Secrets, using pro-tools at his home studio in Denver. The drummer/producer composed and arranged the songs himself and gave the other musicians demos to learn just before it was time to record. “I’d bring the tunes in, play them on the computer, have the guys learn them as fast as possible, and then ‘roll the tape,” Deitch explained.

The Adam Deitch Quartet was augmented by guitarist John Scofield on Roll The Tape lead single “Mushroom Gravy,” which arrived last month. Now out is Soulive homage “Play On Playa.” Soulive features Deitch’s longtime Lettuce bandmates guitarist Eric Krasno and keyboardist Neal Evans along with drummer Alan Evans.

“I owe so much to Soulive for introducing me to organ trio music,” noted Deitch, “They’ve really helped mold the careers of both Lettuce and myself into who we are today.” Blades stars on the incredibly catchy “Play On Playa” bolstered by Deitch’s strong beat and spot-on accents from Bloom and Zoidis.
