Molly Tuttle reached the end of the Golden Highway on her El Dorado tour on Saturday in Denver. The tour-closer at Mile High hotspot Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom saw the rising bluegrass songstress cover classics by the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.
The Grammy-winning bandleader took the name for her run of West Coast October tour dates from the lead track on her latest album, City of Gold. Released back in July, the album with her backing band Golden Highway served as a follow-up to Crooked Tree which took home Best Bluegrass Album at the 2022 Grammys. The new collection of songs heard Tuttle collaborate with Dave Matthews on “Yosemite”, following in the lineage of the feature-friendly Crooked Tree which contained appearances from Billy Strings, Margo Price, Sierra Hull, Old Crow Medicine Show, and more.
Tuttle’s bluegrass lineage is well-documented—she first stepped on stage at age 11 playing with her father Jack Tuttle—but on Saturday she also honored her rock influences. Blending genres and generations, Tuttle and Golden Highway paid tribute to Bay Area psychedelic rockers with takes on the Grateful Dead’s “Dire Wolf” and Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit”. With the Dead tune off Workingman’s Dead, Tuttle and Golden Highway connected to the country-folk stylings that permeated the Grateful Dead’s sound as the 1960s rolled over to the ’70s. Meanwhile on “White Rabbit”, Tuttle let her inner Grace Slick out as she wailed on one of rock’s most famous literary adaptations.
