Studies in the Grateful Dead, a new book series from Duke University Press, will present a collection of scholarly works exploring the cultural significance of the Dead and their community of devoted fans.

Edited by Grateful Dead archivist Nicholas G. Meriwether, the series is set to launch next month with its first title, Get Shown the Light: Improvisation and Transcendence in the Music of the Grateful Dead by religion scholar Michael Kaler. Available November 17th, the book delves into the spiritual and religious layers of the Dead, with a focus on how they used improvisation to turn rock concerts into spiritually charged communal gatherings.

The second book in the series, Live Dead: The Grateful Dead, Live Recordings, and the Ideology of Liveness by John Brackett, examines the role that live recordings, both band-sanctioned and bootleg, played in shaping the history and impact of the Dead. It will be available December 12th.
