For the first time in the festival’s ten-year history, organizers for Suwannee Hulaween have revealed the slate of immersive art programming for the iconic Spirit Lake. Hulaween is set to return to The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL October 26th–29th.

While each year the larger-than-life art displays at Spirit Lake have always served as a delightful surprise, this year the Hula team will give fans a taste of what to expect before they come through the gates. In honor of the festival’s tenth anniversary in 2023, Hulaween has upped the ante with ten new art installations.

Spirit Lake is heralded as one of the top immersive art experiences at a U.S. festival, with artisans from across the globe working in an array of mediums from sculptors to painters to fire/metal workers to thespians and much more. Together, these diverse talents join forces to make the area around Spirit Lake and its four stages into an otherworldly realm limited only by the human imagination.

This year, the Spirit Lake artistic community will return under the guidance of new Creative Director Justin Bolognino, co-founder and CEO of experimental design company META (which has worked with Phish, Skrillex, Porter Robinson, and more). Hulaween will bring back a number of fan-favorite installations, including the Incendia stage concept from Cory Glenn who literally lights up the dancefloor with an illuminating fire-capturing technique. Among the other returning installations are projection mappers Jasper and Shelby Mosher, the 15,000 square foot Mural Maze, Lost Creations‘ immersive House of Lost, and of course, the high-stakes cashless traveling festival casino Frick Frack, along with many others.

In addition to those classics, Hulaween will introduce ten new art installations in 2023. Tyer Schrader will transport Hula to The Cosmic Portal, a double-sided, interactive wooden LED sculpture with 5,000 LEDs on one side and projection mapping on the other. The installation is equipped to detect electrical vibrations of plants and translate them into audio and visual experiences.

Essi Rhodes‘ installation dubbed Chatterpillars will reconnect attendees to a state of childlike playground exuberance, as they talk into one end of the caterpillar to a friend or stranger on the other side. Subloominal & Voxeleyes will immerse fans in nature with the bioluminescent Bioshroom, created by 3D scanning real mushrooms and digitally sculpting them via 3D printer.

Also scheduled to make their debut at Hulaween are Emanuel Zarate Ortiz‘s homage to Mexican storytelling Alebrijes, the Irregular Scheduled Programming upcycle of old tube TVs, Daniel Shield‘s UV reactive Portal PrismTyson Ayers‘ The Sound Cave, and many more.

In addition to a loaded lineup of visual artists, Hulaween will celebrate its tenth birthday with a stacked roster of musicians. The String Cheese Incident will return as hosts, topping a lineup that includes two sets from Pretty Lights as well as Joe Russo’s Almost Dead along with Trey Anastasio BandGooseLes Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog BrigadeBig Wild, and many more. Tickets, which organizers say are 99% sold out, are on sale here.
