Talking Heads Discuss Early Days, ‘Stop Making Sense,’ Band Friction & More On ‘Colbert’

The original members of Talking Heads swung by the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on Wednesday for an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. While David Byrne, Jerry Harrison, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz didn’t perform and sidestepped a question about a musical reunion, they regaled superfan and host Stephen Colbert with stories of their time together and spoke about the 40th anniversary re-release of their legendary 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense.

Stephen Colbert couldn’t contain his excitement to have one of his favorite bands of all-time visit his show. Byrne, Harrison, Weymouth and Frantz have spent the past month talking up the restored Stop Making Sense in a series of interviews and Q&As after going 21 years without appearing together.

It was in the third and final Talking Heads segment on last night’s Colbert when the host asked the two questions on the minds of many fans. “The last couple of decades, there’s been some friction,” Colbert noted before querying, “Is that all water under the bridge?”

Chris Frantz took the high road. “I think any band that’s been together a long time has had twists and turns and ups and downs. We’ve all said things and we’ve all maybe done things that the others didn’t approve of. But I think we love each other and we’ve made such great music together. And this movie … I mean, damn, this movie is so good. We all agree that we have to get together and protect out legacy which is so great,” the drummer said.

“I legally have to ask if there’s any possiblity of protecting your legacy by playing together again,” Colbert responded and pointed out the instruments on stage the musicians could use if they wanted to perform. “It would be legendary right now if you got up there and played a song,” the host added to roars from the crowd. “You’ll be still waiting,” Weymouth told Colbert in using a lyric from “Crosseyed And Painless.” David Byrne then changed the subject back to Stop Making Sense.

The first of the three interview segments featuring Talking Heads saw the members of the band speak about their earliest days together including the musical landscape when they released their debut album Talking Heads: 77. Weymouth discussed touring Europe with The Ramones which she described as a “wonderful experience.” Byrne introduced his bandmates for the second segment. Colbert focused his questions on Stop Making Sense and how the re-release came about. The last segment ended with David Byrne explaining the meaning behind the title of the concert film.
