The Darkness brought the Permission to Land 20th Anniversary Tour to Starland Ballroom in Sayerville, NJ on Saturday with support from Paris Monster. The beloved British rockers delivered an over-the-top performance commemorating the 20th anniversary of the band’s multi-platinum-selling debut album, Permission to Land.
The band played all of the songs from the album, including hits like “Growing on Me”, “Friday Night”, and “I Believe in a Thing Called Love”, plus B-sides and bonus tracks featured on the recent Permission to Land…Again re-issue. The flamboyant foursome also included a cover of Radiohead‘s “Street Spirit (Fade Out)”.
Other highlights included amusing banter from the ever-entertaining Justin Hawkins, including discussions with the crowd about the origins of Buffalo wings and the “great manners” people have in NJ, as well as a guest appearance by the band’s guitar techs and instrument switching during the encore that saw guitarist Dan Hawkins on drums, bassist Frankie Poullain on acoustic guitar, drummer Rufus Taylor on bass, and guitar tech Softy, who at one point paraded Justin Hawkins through the crowd on his shoulders, on Mellotron.
