U2 on Wednesday welcomed the first surprise guest of the band’s celebrated Sphere residency, fellow global superstar Lady Gaga.
During the “turntable” portion of the show, when the band appears on a “Brian Eno turntable” to deviate from its nightly run through Achtung Baby and add some surprises to the setlist, Bono explained that he wrote the next song from a woman’s perspective. “Now, I’ve sang it to women,” he said, “but I’ve never sung it with a woman. I’m gonna do just that tonight. Not just any woman, the most audacious, vivacious woman in any room she’s ever in. Will you welcome to our turntable, the divine, the ‘di-vinyl,’ Lady Gaga.”
With that, Gaga strode out in a leather jacket and sunglasses to trade verses with Bono on Rattle and Hum favorite “All I Want Is You”. As the song began to fade out, Bono began to sing the vocalized refrain from “Shallow”, the hit song Lady Gaga originated as part of her starring role in 2018’s A Star Is Born. Gaga and the band soon joined in, eventually moving into a full sing-along the track’s chorus. After some friendly banter about wandering in the Las Vegas desert and a heartfelt dedication to their shared tour promoter, Arthur Fogel, the Gaga-assisted band closed the segment with an emphatic “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”.

It’s been a busy week for Lady Gaga on the sit-in trail. Just a few days prior, the singer born Stefani Germanotta, joined The Rolling Stones during a surprise album release show at New York’s 600-capacity Racket for a rendition of their Hackney Diamonds collab, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven”.
While Wednesday’s sit-in marked her first time performing at the state-of-the-art Sphere entertainment arena, Lady Gaga had been spotted there earlier this month taking in a U2 performance with a group of fellow A-listers including Eddie Vedder, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and more.
U2 recently announced the addition of eleven new dates at the Sphere that will extend the band’s venue-opening residency into early 2024.
