Tyler Childers performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on September 5, three days before his 2023 album Rustin’ In The Rain arrived. During the country star’s performance of the LP’s “In Your Love,” a couple got engaged after 20 years together.

Childers’ recent Grand Ole Opry appearance saw the singer-songwriter and his stellar band The Food Stamps — pedal steel player James Barker, bassist Craig Burletic, guitarist CJ Cain, drummer Rodney Elkins, keyboardist Chase Lewis and guitarist/fiddler Jesse Wells — delivering all seven tracks from their 2023 album Rustin’ In The Rain and more.

Tyler also welcomed fellow Kentuckian S.G. Goodman, singer-songwriters Margo Price and Erin Rae as well as members of The Travelin’ McCourys who all contributed to the album. But Childers and The Food Stamps went it alone for the penultimate song of the Opry set, Rustin’ In The Rain lead single “In Your Love.”

Childers released “In Your Love” in late July. 2022 Duggins Prize — the largest award for an LGBTQ writer in the nation — winner Silas House directed the video for “In Your Love.”

“As a gay teenager who loved country music, I could have never imagined seeing myself in a video,” House said when the single came out. “That visibility matters. There have always been LGBTQ people in rural places and finally we’re seeing that portrayed in a country music video…

“We wanted to tell as complex a story as we could in four minutes, not only about a gay couple, but also about rural people,” House continued. “We wanted to show their joy and their sorrow—all the things that make up a complex life. Too often simplistic notions are pushed about both rural and LGBTQ people, so we did everything we could to make this story as rich and layered as possible.”

In a heartwarming moment during Tyler Childers’ performance of “In Your Love,” Shon Walker proposed to his partner of 20 years, Jason Hileman. Naturally a little nervous, Walker went to the restroom to practice his proposal and get some final advice from family ahead of the big moment.

“I was in the bathroom probably five minutes before the show started calling family and actually practicing getting down on one knee in the stall,” Walker told News Channel 5 Nashville.

As they got engaged, the couple received a standing ovation — which at first they thought was for Childers. “I kinda blacked out at the time and I heard all this cheering I just thought they were cheering for Tyler,” Hileman said.

Walker and Hileman also got a smile and clap from Tyler as he sang. After “In Your Love,” Tyler congratulated the couple before saying, “I saw what was going on and it was kind of emotional. I’m up here singing; I gotta keep it together.”
