Watch Eddie Vedder Play Pearl Jam Songs With String Quartet In Seattle

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder took the stage last night at Benaroya Hall in Seattle for his second of two solo benefit concerts at the venue. Vedder was joined by a string quartet for a pair of Pearl Jam tunes, a solo cut and Nick Cave cover late in his main set.

Proceeds from the shows on Monday and Tuesday were donated to the EB Research Partnership. Eddie Vedder and his wife Jill founded the organization in 2010 with a group of parents to discover treatments and cures for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a group of rare diseases that cause the skin to blister easily.

Eddie Vedder opened on Tuesday with “Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town,” one of a number of Pearl Jam classics that made the setlist. “Drifting,” “Better Man,” “Immortality” and “Porch” were among others played last night. The hometown hero also worked in such covers as The Beatles’ “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” Cat Power’s “Good Woman,” Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” and Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” within his main set. Vedder used a guitar Petty gifted him for “I Won’t Back Down,” which was a rare use of the axe as he won’t allow the instrument to be shipped.

After performing “Better Man” in the 12-slot, Eddie Vedder brought out a string quartet. Sada James Doup (violin), Brianna Atwell (violin), April Acevez Cameron (viola) and Chris Worswick (cello) first backed Vedder on “Longing To Belong” from his 2011 sophomore solo album, Ukulele Songs. Next up from Eddie and the strings was a stirring performance of Pearl Jam classic “Just Breathe.”

Eddie Vedder, Atwell, Doup, Cameron and Worswick went on to perform the Nick Cave-penned “The Ship Song.” Nick Caven & The Bad Seeds originally released “The Ship Song” on their 1990 album, The Good Son. The strings stuck around to accompany Vedder on a fast version of “Lukin,” a song off Pearl Jam’s 1996 LP No Code. Eddie went it alone to end the set with “Porch.”

Last night’s encore began by Eddie Vedder performing John Lennon’s “Imagine” by request and in response to fans holding up signs spelling “imagine a cure.” He then offered up the Bruce Springsteen classic “Open All Night” before delivering “Mrs. Mills,” the evening’s lone song played from the 2022 Vedder solo album Earthling. Eddie wrapped up the concert and two-night stand with “Hard Sun.
