Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer Joe Walsh is best known for his mastery of the guitar, but before he formed The James Gang, joined Eagles and launched a successful solo career he was introduced to music by playing clarinet as a kid. Walsh appeared on Wednesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he joined the host for a clarinet jam before teaming with members of house band The Cleotones to perform his song “In The City.”

Joe Walsh’s sat for an interview with Jimmy Kimmel focusing on the upcoming VetsAid 2023 show. Jeff Lynne’s ELO, Stephen Stills, The War On Drugs, The Flaming Lips and Lucius join Joe Walsh on the lineup for the benefit concert to raise funds for veterans set to take place at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, California near San Diego on November 12.

The 75-year-old musician’s father was in the military which led him to co-found VetsAid to support the veteran population. After Walsh explained why the cause is close to his heart, he recalled how James Gang came to open for The Who in Europe when they premiered Tommy. Jimmy Kimmel went on to ask about Joe’s formative days as a musician. Walsh revealed he started on clarinet and moved to oboe before picking up the guitar.

“I realized that I’m not going to get any girls playing clarinet,” Walsh said of why he gave up the instrument. Jimmy Kimmel noted he too played clarinet in grade school. The host then whipped out a pair of clarinet and engaged in a jam with Walsh. While Joe made some decent tones, Jimmy could eek out nothing more than a few squeaks.

Joe Walsh ended last night’s episode by performing the aforementioned “In The City.” The Cleotones’ backing vocalists gave the song a gospel feel. Walsh initially recorded “In The City” for the soundtrack of the 1979 film The Warriors. The Eagles then included their own version on The Long Run album later that same year.
