John Mayer has been playing some of his favorite Grateful Dead songs during his solo acoustic tour, and the Dead & Company guitarist continued the rollout on Saturday at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY with a snippet of “Bird Song” dedicated to one very special fan—well, sort of.
After amusing Deadheads by blending “Dark Star” with “Your Body is a Wonderland” in Chicago on Wednesday, Mayer spotted an unusual sign in the crowd on Saturday that read, “FaceTime my bird.” Always receptive to creative fan requests, Mayer indeed got on a FaceTime call with a fan’s pet bird via an iPad the fan held up for Mayer to see.
“I don’t know what kind of moment it makes on stage for me to hold the iPad and look at the bird, but i can see the bird from here,” Mayer said before joking, “Would the bird know who I am? Am I such a mainstay in the home the bird—” He then walked toward the edge of the stage and played a brief instrumental tease of the opening melody from “Bird Song”, a natural choice for the remote audience of one.
