When John Mayer was picked to fill the lead guitar spot in Dead & Company back in 2015, a popular jokey response to the news was that the group would jam “Your Body Is A Wonderland” into “Dark Star.” While Dead & Company never performed “Your Body Is A Wonderland” or any other Mayer song, the guitarist pulled off a “Your Body Is A Wonderland” wrapped within “Dark Star” last night during his solo concert at Chicago’s United Center.
“I’m not going to set it up, this is going to be the weirdest thing you ever saw in your life and I’m proud to do it,” John Mayer advised the crowd towards the end of his second main acoustic portion of the concert. Mayer played the intro riff to the Grateful Dead psychedelic classic “Dark Star” and vamped on the main theme. “I want you to mark it on the setlist that this is technically ‘Dark Star,’” Mayer said as he performed the instrumental version. “And I’m going from ‘Dark Star’ into this next song … it’s a transition. I want you to mark the transition.”
John Mayer then slickly segued into “Your Body Is A Wonderland,” the 2002 single that helped propel him to superstardom. “I did it … I DID THAT,” Mayer exclaimed with a huge smile on his after pulling off the transition. He went on to perform the song and volleyed lyrics with the audience.
“We have some unfinished business,” Mayer noted as he returned to the spot in the instrumental solo “Dark Star” where he left off. He jammed on the main theme rhythmically for a minute or two and then finished the song. “You know what that just was?,” Mayer asked the crowd. “And I do this with extremely love for my brothers in the company,” the guitarist continued. “With all love and reverence that was ‘Dark Star’/’Your Body Is A Wonderland’/’Dark Star’.”

The “Dark Star” > “Your Body Is A Wonderland” > “Dark Star” actually followed another Mayer original wrapped in a Grateful Dead song. “Chicago is the place to do this,” John said before acknowledging a request for and launching into “Bertha,” a tune he admitted, “I had no intention of playing this song on this stage but you made me feel so comfortable.” The Connecticut native delicately moved from “Bertha” into “The Age Of Worry,” a standout cut from his 2012 studio album Born And Raised. He finished his own song and returned to the conclusion of “Bertha.” Mayer said he realized “those two kinda fit” of “Bertha” and “The Age Of Worry” before he proceeded to pair “Dark Star” and “Wonderland.”

John Mayer also paid tribute to his friend, the late actor/comedian Bob Saget, by performing “Badge And Gun” from 2013’s Paradise Valley in his honor. The night ended with an encore of “Comfortable” and “Free Fallin’.” Next up for Mayer is a show in Baltimore on Friday night.
