Little Feat brought The Albums Tour to Town Hall in New York City for front-to-back performances of classic albums Sailin’ Shoes on Friday, October 6 and Dixie Chicken on Saturday, October 7 along with “the hits.” Fan-shot video of special guests Scott Metzger and Southside Johnny joining the band for a lengthy walk through “Dixie Chicken” has surfaced and can be viewed below.
The current Little Feat lineup consists of longtime members keyboardist Bill Payne, bassist Kenny Gradney, percussionist Sam Clayton and multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett along with guitarist Scott Sharrard and drummer Tony Leone. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead guitarist Scott Metzger and renowned Jersey Shore musician Southside Johnny, leader of Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, both contributed to the performance of the title track from Little Feat’s 1973 studio album during Dixie Chicken night at Town Hall on Saturday.
“Dixie Chicken” spanned over 12 minutes in New York City. Tackett played trumpet over a samba groove provided by Payne, Leone and Clayton as an intro. Sharrard handled lead vocals on the start of the Town Hall “Dixie Chicken” before passing duties off to Southside Johnny, who also played harmonica on the fan-favorite song.
Scott Metzger peeled off a soaring solo to get the “Dixie Chicken” jam underway on Saturday. Payne took over and brought the song to a brief pause while he shouted out Metzger who received huge cheers from the audience. Southside Johnny sang the second verse after “Dixie Chicken” resumed and then traded licks on harmonica with guitar from Tackett. Metzger and Sharrard joined in and volleyed riffs with Southside Johnny to close the jam. The final verse was helmed by Southside Johnny.
