After My Morning Jacket debuted It Still Moves outtake “Grab A Body” during their opening salvo at the Beacon Theatre on Thursday, MMJ continued their three-night run in New York City on October 20. Friday saw frontman Jim James and opener Madi Diaz dueting on a shimmering cover of beloved Yusuf / Cat Stevens song “The Wind.”

“The Wind” opens the 1971 Cat Stevens album, Teaser and the Firecat. The song has also appeared on iconic film soundtracks including Almost Famous and Rushmore. My Morning Jacket recently unveiled “The Wind” at Red Rocks. The Jim James duet with singer-songwriter Madi Diaz at the Beacon marked the second play at an MMJ concert.

The performance of “The Wind” came one song into the encore in NYC on Friday. Jim began the song solo on acoustic guitar — much to the delight of the audience — with Madi joining him to share a mic for a gorgeous rendition of the Teaser and the Firecat classic. Watch below:

Jacket launched the concert on Friday with a full record version of “Cobra,” off the 2002 EP Chocolate and Ice — which is basically a Jim James solo effort. “Cobra” is a 24-minute track on the EP and MMJ stretched the tune out to nearly 17 minutes at the Beacon.

Additional favorites in My Morning Jacket’s main set included “Gideon,” “Run It” and “I’m Amazed,” the latter followed by a pair of songs, “Least Expected” and “Lucky To Be Alive,” off My Morning Jacket’s 2021 self titled album. The band also turned in a 10-minute rendition of “War Begun” followed by the relatively rare At Dawn cut “Strangulation!”

Following staple “Victory Dance,” the quintet continued to deliver lesser-played songs including the second 2023 performance of “O Is the One That Is Real” and “It’s About Twilight Now,” the latter off MMJ’s 1998 debut album Tennessee Fire. The band returned to staple material to close the set with “Anytime” off 2005’s Z.

The encore got underway with Tennessee Fire’s “Butch Cassidy” followed by the Diaz duet on “The Wind.” The band then resumed the rarities with “Only Memories Remain” and “First Light.” The encore wrapped with the favorite “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2.”

My Morning Jacket concluded their Beacon Theatre Run on Saturday. The finale featured Circuital standout “Holdin On To Black Metal” and additional favorites like “Dondante” and closer “Wordless Chorus.” The concert also included another Jim James duet with Madi Diaz on MMJ oldie “I Will Be There When You Die.” Watch below:
