Watch Smokey Robinson Mix Motown Classics With New Songs For ‘Tiny Desk Concert’

Smokey Robinson recently stopped by NPR Studios to perform a Tiny Desk Concert. The Motown legend offered a six-song set of standouts from across his iconic catalog.

Robinson brought a large ensemble to Tiny Desk creator Bob Boilen’s work space including a string quartet — violinists Sally Gorski and Tiffany Ibáñez-Weiss, violist Lakshmi James and cellist Camille Johnson — along with saxophonist/flutist Brandon Wright, keyboardists Demetrios Pappas and S’von, bassist Gary Foote, drummer Tony Lewis and guitarist Robert “Boogie” Bowles. Lindsay Walker and Karrie Benoit-Morales provided backing vocals. Smokey kicked off the session off with his 1981 hit, “Being With You.”

Next came Smokey Robinson & The Miracles’ stellar 1967 song, “The Tears Of A Clown,” which Smokey noted he co-wrote with Stevie Wonder. Robinson then got into new material from his 2023 album, Gasms, “If We Don’t Have Each Other” and “Beside You.” 1975’s “Quiet Storm” came next before Smokey led a sing-along on the 1979 classic “Cruisin.”
