Watch The Mother Hips & Wilco Members Cover Neil Young In Santa Barbara

Both The Mother Hips and Wilco played shows in Santa Barbara last Friday, October 13 with the former at SOhO and the latter down the block at the Arlington Theatre. Wilco bassist John Stirratt, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone and drummer Glenn Kotche made their way to SOhO after their gig to join The Hips for an encore featuring a pair of Neil Young covers.

The relationship between The Mother Hips and Wilco dates back to 1995, when both groups were part of that summer’s H.O.R.D.E. Tour. Members of each group met and quickly became friends, following each other’s careers over the past 28 years. Additionally, Wilco tapped The Mother Hips as support for their 1998 New Year’s Eve concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco.

Stirratt, Sansone and Kotche augmented The Mother Hips on Young’s “Barstool Blues” and “Out On The Weekend” in Santa Barbara. John Stirratt handled lead vocals on both songs. “Out On The Weekend” opens Neil Young’s iconic 1972 album Harvest and “Barstool Blues” arrived three years later on Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s Zuma LP.

The Mother Hips drummer John Hofer and Glenn Kotche traded off drum and percussion duties in the middle of each song. “Out On The Weekend” featured a saxophone solo courtesy of The Mother Hips’ multi-instrumentalist Scheila Gonzalez (Zappa Plays Zappa, Men At Work).
