Watch Umphrey’s McGee Pair Improv-Laced ‘Plunger’ & ’In The Kitchen’ With Goose’s Ben Atkind

Umphrey’s McGee has been joined by a series of guest drummers since August while Kris Myers recovers from shoulder surgery. The band recently shared pro-shot video, viewable below, featuring Goose‘s Ben Atkind behind the kit for a standout sequence of “Plunger” and “In The Kitchen” from their concert on August 25 in Asheville.

The veteran jam act’s show on August 25 was their first of two nights at Asheville’s Salvage Station. Ben Atkind wasn’t the evening’s only guest. Claude Coleman Jr. of Ween joined Umphrey’s McGee on drums for “The Grobe” and “Transdermal Celebration” in the middle of the first set. Later, guitarist Daniel Donato sat-in during the second set when he added to UM original “Nothing Too Fancy” and a take on Tyler Childers‘ “Whitehouse Road.”

UM kicked off the evening’s second set with a 30-minute “Plunger”/”In The Kitchen” combo. Both songs are featured on the band’s 2004 studio album Anchor Drops. They are complex compositions with plenty of changes. Ben Atkind came through in fine form, nailing the transitions and providing a powerful base for the improvisation.

Guitarist Brendan Bayliss took a moment during the transition to dedicate “In The Kitchen” to Violet Ston, the daughter of UM monitor engineer Bob Ston, in honor of her birthday. Bayliss also changed a lyric to reference “Violet’s birthday toy.”

Ben Atkind will be among Umphrey’s McGee’s guest drummers for their New Year’s Eve Run in Chicago. The band plays the Riviera Theatre in their hometown December 29 – 31.
