North Carolina rock powerhouse Big Something has released its seventh studio album, Headspace, via Truth Serum Records.

Big Something recorded Headspace with Grammy Award-nominated producer John Custer during an immersive, retreat-style trip to Minnesota’s storied Pachyderm Recording Studios, where Nirvana captured In Utero. Thoughtful songwriting, weighty themes, and nimble musicianship come together on tracks like “The Mountain” and “Chemistry”, while collaborations with SUSTO and Andy Frasco (on “Clouds“) and Josh Phillips (on “Bob and Weave”) showcase the band’s adaptability in a collaborative setting.

Headspace also holds a special significance for the band members as it pays tribute to guitarist/vocalist Nick MacDaniels’ lifelong best friend and frequent collaborator, Paul Interdonato. The majority of Big Something’s lyrics were written by Interdonato before his untimely passing in 2017.

“There are so many special things about this album for us,” MacDaniels explains. “It’s both a requiem and a rebirth for us as a band. Honoring old friends, welcoming new ones and growing even closer together as musicians and brothers in the process.”

The arrival of Headspace also rounds out an ambitious rollout process in which Big Something highlighted a different non-profit working in the mental health and wellness space with each of the album’s pre-release singles. Highlighted organizations included Sound Mind Live, Last Prisoner Project, and SAMHSA’s National Helpline.

Said Sound Mind Live executive director Chris Bullard. “Music has the power to inspire, connect, and drive social change – and working with artists like Big Something to support their community and fans has a transformative impact on individual lives as well as longer-term shifts in cultural norms around compassion and empathy with regards to mental health.”
