A new segment on CBS‘s 60 Minutes profiles blues standard-bearer Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, exploring his upbringing, influences, and contributions to the genre.

The Grammy-winning guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter takes reporter Jon Wertheim on a tour of his hometown, Clarksdale, Mississippi, and shares his thoughts on music, blues, and life.

“I really appreciate the 60 Minutes team for allowing me an opportunity to tell my story and for also highlighting the greater connection of blues and Clarksdale,” said Kingfish. “Shining a light on our pocket of the world is important and I’m grateful for the platform the show has given me, my friends and my hometown.”

During the interview, Wertheim asked Kingfish how he feels about being compared to fellow Mississippi bluesman B.B. King. Kingfish replied, “I like to say I feel like I’m B.B. if he [took off that suit], put on some Jordans, and put his hat backwards.”

He went on to emphasize the influence of older generations of artists, declaring, “There wouldn’t be no 50 Cent or Lil Wayne if it wasn’t for Son House and Robert Johnson, and the list goes on and on.”

Finally, the conversation turned to the future, and whether Kingfish is worried about the state of the blues. “Nah, not at all,” he said. “There’s always going to be a little kid somewhere that’s listening to B.B., Stevie, anybody else.”
