Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country celebrated Halloween with a “Trick Or Train” concert at Turner Hall in Milwaukee. The “Trick” first set featured the band leaving the setlist up to chance, while the “Train” second set was devoted to songs about trains.
“Welcome to “Trick Or Train’ everyone,” Donato said at the start of the show. “The first set tonight is the trick of improvisation. For 60 minutes, we’re going to try to play our way into any one of these songs that will be randomly chosen by this cosmic wheel of destiny. We’ve never done this before. When I say ‘trick’ the wheel will spin and it will stop on its own accord at a song that we have no idea what it’s gonna be and we’ll go from there.”
The Wheel Of Tricks was projected on a large screen behind the band. The wheel’s first spin landed on “Weathervane” which resulted in a lengthy opening jam. Donato’s next “trick” spin resulted in “Luck Of The Draw.”

The wheel kept turning, selecting “Ten Feet Of Rope” and “Double Exposure,” making it four-for-four on songs appearing on Donato’s upcoming studio album coming out on November 10, Reflector. The final “trick” of the set was a stretched-out “Down Bedford.”
Donato and his bandmates – keyboardist/guitarist Nathan “Sugarleg” Aronowitz, bassist Will McGee and drummer Will Clark – emerged from set break wearing railroad-style striped overalls. Throughout the ensuing set, Donato & Co. provided a survey of covers of songs about trains and the railroad. The Cosmic Conductors began with an a cappella performance of “I’ve Been Working On The Railroad.”
