Dave Matthews Band launched an eight-show fall tour last night with a sold-out concert at Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia. The septet kicked off the trek by opening with a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker,” a song last played in that slot way back on September 19, 1992.
Wednesday’s DMB show in Savannah featured a career-spanning 21-song setlist. The unusual opener was followed by a performance of “Lying In The Hands Of God” off the band’s 2009 record Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which gave way to the recently revived “American Baby Intro” before “Break Free” concluded the seamless three-song run. “Break Free” was one of three cuts from DMB’s latest LP, Walk Around The Moon played at Enmarket Arena as “Madman’s Eyes” and “Looking For A Vein” also saw action last night.
The main set in Savannah featured a slew of beloved staples. “Dancing Nancies,” “Warehouse,” “Don’t Drink The Water,” “Lover Lay Down” and “Say Goodbye” were all played at the tour opener. Dave Matthews Band punctuated the frame with fan-favorite “Grey Street.”
Dave Matthews returned to start last night’s encore with a solo acoustic rendition of Willie Nelson‘s “Funny How Time Slips Away.” Matthews last performed the song after inducting Nelson into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this past Friday night during a ceremony held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Dave informed the crowd he was “on a Willie Nelson kick” before playing the tune initially released by country singer Billy Walker in 1961. The other six members of DMB came back to accompany Dave Matthews on the oft-paired “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Rapunzel” to wrap the first show of their fall tour.
