Melbourne/Naarm art-punk outfit Gut Health – the talk of the town at the recent BIGSOUND and SXSW Sydney festivals – have released the new single ‘Juvenile Retention’. The song will feature on the band’s upcoming 7″, Singles ’23, alongside previous releases ‘The Recipe’ and ‘Uh Oh’.
Gut Health will celebrate the new release with a gig at Melbourne’s John Curtin Hotel on Friday, 24th November, with support from Tongue Dissolver, It Thing and DJ Daddy. The sextet are also on the lineup for this year’s Meredith Music Festival and will join Queens of the Stone Age on their 2024 Australian tour.
Gut Health – ‘Juvenile Retention’
‘Juvenile Retention’ is powered by Adam Markmann’s busy bass playing, over which vocalist Athina Uh Oh grapples with the ramifications of various unhealthy coping mechanisms. “I like using the profound impact of power and energy exchange on oneself in my songwriting – moving and unmoving, soft versus stiff, sadism and softness,” Uh oh said in a statement.
Uh Oh directed the ‘Juvenile Retention’ music video, which features an unsteady wash of moving images rendered in lurid red and black. Singles ’23 follows Gut Health’s debut 7″, last year’s Electric Party Chrome Girl. It’s out on Friday, 24th November via Marthouse Records. Pre-order it here.
