A pair of Levi’s jeans worn by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain sold for $412,750 at auction, far exceeding the initial estimate of between $10,000 and $20,000.
The sale was part of a three-day auction, Played, Worn & Torn: Rock ‘N’ Roll Iconic Guitars and Memorabilia, held by Julien’s auctions, which included a huge amount of items from a number of iconic artists including Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, Prince, Kiss, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and many more.
In addition to myriad instruments, stage-worn clothing, and signed records, the auction included some more unusual offerings like a brick from Liverpool’s Cavern Club, where The Beatles got their start (winning big: $1,950), a fragment of the fuselage recovered from Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s 1977 plane crash ($1,040), a pistol owned by Elvis ($16,250), and a ring worn by Janis Joplin at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival ($76,200).
Cobain’s jeans were among the most surprising sales. The vintage Levi’s 501s were originally gifted to him by Babes in Toyland drummer Lori Barbero and were well worn, with a blown-out seat, patchwork knees, and floral hem detailing. Cobain wore the jeans in the music video from “Heart Shaped Box”, on stage at NYC’s Rosewood Ballroom, and at the 1993 MTV VMAs.
While vintage Levi’s from the 1800s have recently sold for upwards of $100,000, Cobain’s jeans are among the most expensive pairs ever sold. The cardigan he wore during Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance previously sold for a record $334,000, making it the most expensive sweater ever sold. An argyle cardigan owned and worn by the guitarist was included in the auction and sold for $13,000.
The guitar that Cobain played at his last public performance was also part of the auction and sold for $1,587,500. The guitar he used in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” previously sold for $4.5 million.
