John Mayer Plays Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Patience’ On Piano In San Francisco

John Mayer has been letting it all hang out over the course a solo acoustic tour that made its penultimate stop on Tuesday with a concert at San Francisco’s Chase Center by diving deep into his repertoire, taking requests for songs that don’t exist, singing to birds via Facetime and debuting covers. While Mayer has changed up the setlist each night, the piano interlude in the middle of each concert has remained fairly consistent. A switch came in San Francisco when he attempted to cover Guns N’ Roses‘ “Patience” on the keys.

The 46-year-old musician stumbled upon “Patience” between versions of “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me” and “Changing” at Chase Center. Mayer last pulled off a cover of the song from GN’R’s Lies EP in 2003 with Adam Levine when Maroon 5 was opening for him.

On Tuesday, Mayer sang a few of the lyrics in San Francisco and cracked himself up at the realization he was performing “Patience.” He continued to sing a few additional lyrics and decided to play the “I’ve been walking the streets tonight” refrain. After about a minute Mayer gave up and began “Changing.”

The piano interlude followed a 12-song acoustic segment to start the concert. Mayer looked to 2006’s Continuum for the “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” opener and then played Sob Rock cut “Shot It The Dark” before offering a double dose of his 2012 LP Born & Raised in “The Age Of Worry” and “Queen Of California.” Next came the classic “Why Georgia” and Battle Studies gem “Who Says” leading into Mayer scanning the crowd for signs with requests.

John Mayer scouted a fan in “sign world” asking him to “pick a key.” Mayer chose a few keys but wasn’t pleased when the songs underneath the keys weren’t in his repertoire. He did attempt the Ray Charles-popularized “I Don’t Need No Doctor” yet stopped after a few bars as his voice couldn’t reach the high notes. Instead he went back to the setlist he had planned for “Waitin’ On The Day” and “Neon.” Mayer did perform “Comfortable” off his Inside Wants Out EP following a spin of a wheel on a sign with multiple rarities listed.

After delivering the piano interlude, Mayer went back to acoustic guitar for a run of songs that included oldies “3×5” and “Your Body Is A Wonderland” as well as a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” and a few other originals. He then utilized his Martin double-neck acoustic for “Gravity” before ending the concert with an encore pairing “Born And Raised” and Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.”
