Kitchen Dwellers announced a new album, Seven Devils, due out on March 1. The Bozeman, Montana Americana/bluegrass outfit also shared the lead single/video, “Seven Devils (Limbo),” and shared the first dates on their Seven Devils 7 Cities Tour
KD captured Seven Devils at GBP Studios in East Lansing, Michigan with Grammy-winning producer Glenn Brown (Billy Strings, Greensky Bluegrass). Guitarist Max Davies detailed the recording process and working with Brown:
“We knew going into this project that we wanted to work with someone that was really going to push us. Glenn has a way of working the music out of you in a way that is all his own – creating songs out of nothing. Many tunes on this record were written as a result of improvising and trying out different ideas. Each song contains a piece from everyone in the band. Every tune on the record holds musical ideas from each one of us. For this reason, we think it sounds the most like us that any record has.”
Kitchen Dwellers drew inspiration for Seven Devils from Dante’s Divine Comedy. In a similar fashion to the classic work’s voyage through the Nine Circles of Hell, each track on Seven Devils represents one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Seven Devils has also cropped up in the band’s travels, as Davies explained.
“The name ‘Seven Devils’ is something I found throughout our travels as a band. Not only are there several places in the Carolinas that hold this namesake, but also along the Northwest Pacific coast as well. Even beyond this is the ‘Seven Devils’ mountain range, located in western Idaho along the Snake River. Not only is this name found in many places, but it appears to also come from many sources. Some are Biblical in nature – i.e. the seven demons cast out of Mary Magdalene – while others hold Native American origins. The lyrics of [‘Seven Devils (Limbo)’] pull reference from all of these stories.”
