Greensky Bluegrass took the stage on Thursday at the Fox Theater in Oakland for the second stop of their fall tour accompanied by keyboardist Holly Bowling. “#6reensky” welcomed Trey Anastasio Band trombonist Natalie Cressman for a song suite at the end of their set and dobroist Andy Hall of opening act The Infamous Stringdusters for last night’s encore.
The band — mandolinist Paul Hoffman, guitarist Dave Bruzza, dobro player Anders Beck, banjo wiz Michael Arlen Bont and bassist Mike Devol — launched the marathon frame alongside Bowling with Shouted, Written Down & Quoted track “Living Over.” #6reensky then delivered a trifecta of fairly new material in “Wish I Didn’t Know,” “New & Improved” and “Entirely Mine.” A cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues” followed before it was back to a pairing of songs debuted in recent years — “Stress Dreams” and “Born Again.”
Greensky and Bowling devoted the rest of the frame to classic material with one exception. The beloved “Windshield” came ahead of Bruzza’s “Kerosene” and Hoffman’s “Reverend.” Next up was “Blood Sucking F(r)iends” and the aforementioned exception — “Give A Shit” from the band’s latest record, Stress Dreams.
Oakland’s own Natalie Cressman emerged for a “Leap Year” sequence that featured Greensky’s first cover of the Prince hit “1999” since four years to the day prior within. Cressman played trombone throughout the segment and sang “1999.” Andy Hall then helped Greensky Bluegrass and Holly Bowling end the night with a “Reuben’s Train” (The Dillards) encore.
