North Mississippi Allstars multi-instrumentalist Cody Dickinson recalls his blues roots with his new cover of Junior Kimbrough‘s “All Night Long”. The solo release marks the NMA co-founder’s debut single on Petaluma Records and comes with a video from Take Me To The River director Martin Shore.
Dickinson announces the cover with a prolonged fuzzy intro with pounding drum fills and wailing vocals, all provided by Cody who played, sang, engineered, and produced every note on the track. Settling into a bouncy main groove, the neo-blues simplicity coalesces to become greater than the sum of its parts in a personalized tribute to a classic.
“’All Night Long’ is an anthem hit from Junior Kimbrough’s in Tchulahoma, Mississippi,” Dickinson shared in a press release. “Junior and his sons David and Kent would close the show with this song every Sunday night, usually with RL Burnside and his family playing and watching. I was so blessed in this life to have witnessed this firsthand.”
Dickinson came into the fold at Petaluma Records as a co-producer for 2022’s Take Me To The River: New Orleans soundtrack. The documentary traces NOLA’s musical and cultural history alongside a Grammy-winning compilation featuring The Neville Brothers, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, Snoop Dogg, Eric Krasno, George Porter Jr., and more. Dickinson plans to release his full-length solo debut for Petaluma Records in late spring 2024.
