Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante delivered a Syd Barrett cover during the band’s concert at Arena BRB Mané in Garrincha, Brazil on Tuesday. Frusciante offered the Pink Floyd founding frontman’s solo cut “Terrapin.”
The Barrett nod came as the penultimate song of RHCP’s main set. “Terrapin” appears on Syd’s 1970 debut solo album, The Madcap Laughs. While Barrett’s former Pink Floyd bandmates David Gilmour and Roger Waters contributed to the record, the instrumentation of “Terrapin” is sparse making for a perfect solo performance.
Although Frusciante wasn’t entirely alone either. In the video below, as John gets into the song, he pauses and someone out of frame says, “Please don’t stop, please don’t stop. I love that tempo.” As John walks over it appears to be someone with a bass, presumably legendary Chili Peppers bassist Flea. Watch a clip of the “Terrapin” cover.
RHCP jammed their way into “Around The World to launch the concert, off their landmark 1999 album Californication. Additional favorites from the record included “Scar Tissue” and the title track. The rockers also offered four songs from their 2022 LP Unlimited Love: “Aquatic Mouth Dance,” “These Are The Ways,” “Whatchu Thinkin’” and “Black Summer.” The concert closed with a two-song encore of Blood Sugar Sex Magik cuts, “I Could Have Lied” and “Give It Away.”
