The Smile has announced its highly anticipated sophomore album, Wall Of Eyes, and shared a video for the title track directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
The trio comprised of Radiohead bandmates Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood with drummer Tom Skinner (formerly of Sons of Kemet), The Smile released its debut album, A Light For Attracting Attention, to much fanfare and critical acclaim last year. The band previously shared photos indicating they were back in the studio and in June released the one-off single “Bending Hectic”, which appears on the tracklist of the album below.
Due out January 26th via XL Recordings, Wall Of Eyes was recorded in Oxford and at Abbey Road in London with Sam Petts-Davies, rather than with Yorke and Greenwood’s usual producer Nigel Godrich. The album also features contributions from the London Contemporary Orchestra.
“Wall Of Eyes” is a dreamy track, with the ethereal echos and atmospheric string arrangements reminiscent of Radiohead. The song is laid back and, with minimal contributions from Skinner, lacks the distinctive jazzy groove that differentiated the trio’s sound on its first album. The song strikes a similar tone yet generally stands in contrast to the previous, more experimental single, “Bending Hectic”, which starts off slow and gentle before building to a chaotic fuzz rock climax.
The Smile also announced March tour dates in Europe and the U.K., with tickets going on sale at 9 a.m. GMT this Friday, November 17th. Sign up for presale access here.
