Watch John Mayer Cover Fleetwood Mac ‘80s Hit In Austin

John Mayer brought his solo acoustic arena tour to Austin’s Moody Center on Wednesday. The guitarist unveiled a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s 1987 hit “Everywhere” in the Texas capital.

“Everywhere” appears on Fleetwood Mac’s ‘87 album, Tango in the Night. The record began prophetically as a Lindsey Buckingham solo project that transformed into a Mac record, marking Buckingham’s last studio effort with the band until 2003. Christine McVie wrote “Everywhere.” The song peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Mayer fit the Mac hit into the 19th song slot of his concert in Austin on Wednesday. “I swear I’ve never tried to play this song on the guitar,” John said ahead of the performance. “I’m going to be working it out. If I actually ace it, I want you to believe that I aced it. I know you’ll believe that I screwed it up.”

Mayer kicked off the concert with “Heartbreak Warfare” off his 2009 album, Battle Studies. The Dead & Company guitarist also played around with an instrumental snippet of the Grateful Dead’s “Casey Jones” ahead of teasing “Back To You” from his 2001 debut album, Room For Squares — the first appearance of the song since 2017, as per SetlistFM stats.

After performing “You’re Gonna Live Forever in Me” and “Changing” on piano, John returned to guitar for a set-closing sequence including classics and favorites like “Your Body Is A Wonderland,” “Neon,” the Fleetwood Mac premiere and “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” among others.

John wrapped the main set with Battle Studies‘ “Edge of Desire.” The guitarist returned to field a sign request for “Comfortable” to begin his encore before capping the concert with Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin.”
