My Morning Jacket took the stage at The Chicago Theatre on Thursday for their first of three fall tour-closing concerts in Chicago. Frontman Jim James fit their third and final complete It Still Moves performance of the trek into the show after they started the night with a surprise in honor of the Windy City.
The Louisville-based band came out of the gates by delivering “Sweet Home Chicago.” Jacket had never played the blues standard first recorded by Robert Johnson until Thursday night.
Last night’s location-appropriate number came on the heels of the quintet’s “St. Louis Blues” cover debut in St. Louis on Tuesday. Unlike the latter, the “Sweet Home Chicago” performance was more fleshed out and was a full-band affair. James belted out the lyrics while guitarist Carl Broemel chimed in with harmonies and uncorked a furious solo after Jim proclaimed, “Show ’em what you can do, Carl!” The frontman offered a quick shred session himself before finishing the song.

My Morning Jacket followed “Sweet Home Chicago” by tearing through “Mahgeetah,” (also in the video above) the song that opens It Still Moves. The 2003 record turns 20 this year and the band celebrated the occasion with a full 12-song rendering of the LP in New York City last month, Atlanta last weekend and in Chicago on Thursday.
James, Broemel, drummer Patrick Hallahan, keyboardist Bo Koster and bassist Tom Blankenship returned for an extended encore after finishing their main set with It Still Moves closer “One In The Same.” Up first was Jacket’s first cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” since 2021, which led into “In Color” and then the third-ever performance of It Still Moves outtake “Grab A Body.” The song initially released as part of the 2016 It Still Moves (Deluxe) reissue was premiered live on the night celebrating the album in NYC and was played again in Atlanta earlier this month.
Last night’s encore rolled out with “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.)” off James’ 2013 solo effort Regions Of Light And Sound Of God, Evil Urges standout “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 1,” “Least Expected” from the band’s 2021 self-titled LP and At Dawn (2001) gem “X-Mas Curtain.” My Morning Jacket punctuated the night by offering the title track of their 2011 record “Circuital” in the closer slot for the first time since September 12, 2015.
Two more shows remain for My Morning Jacket’s fall tour and Chicago Theatre run. Pay-per-view livestreams can be purchased for the Friday and Saturday concerts through nugs.net.
