Many Swifties probably have “Bad Blood” with Detroit’s 95.5 WKQI after the station brought out a Taylor Swift impersonator during the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball on Tuesday. While the holiday concert at the Motor City’s Little Caesars Arena did feature performances by Usher, Jelly Roll, Big Time Rush, and other chart-toppers, it did not host an appearance from TIME‘s newly crowned Person of the Year.
During the show, 95.5’s Mojo in the Morning introduced a special guest, “She’s arguably having the best year of anyone ever. Is anybody familiar with a song called ‘Cruel Summer?’ Does anybody know a song called ‘Karma?’”
As Mojo introduced her “in her Jingle Bells Era,” cheers and deafening screams filled the arena so that his next words sounded a lot like “Taylor Swift.” A blond woman donning an acoustic guitar sprinted onstage, only for the screen behind her to clarify this was in fact “Trailor Swift”, played by WKQI producer Kristin Penrose. Disbelief then turned to anger in real-time as the versatility of the phrase “what the f–k?” was definitively proven while disappointed fans were forced to watch the impersonator sing a couple Taylor Swift songs. The entire stunt was intended to promote the station’s ticket giveaway for a concert by Taylor Swift, the real Taylor Swift, in Indianapolis in November 2024.
