grateful dead share winter solstice playlist on streaming services listen
A new Winter Solstice playlist shared by the Grateful Dead is now available on streaming services. The 16-hour playlist features a mix of live recordings dating from the late ’60s through the early ’90s to get you through the roughly 16 hours of darkness on the shortest day of the year.
While the playlist selections don’t appear to follow any particular seasonal pattern—tracks come from shows throughout the calendar pages in various years and locations around the world—they form a potent sampler for any Dead fan. Notable highlights include the band’s soundcheck jam from the famed 1973 Watkins Glen Summer Jam; “Cryptical Envelopment” from Frankfurt, Germany during the Europe ’72 tour; a loping Phil Lesh solo and the ensuing warning to the crowd “Take a step back” from Rochester ’77; an “Alligator”/”Caution (Do Not Step on Tracks)” combo from 1967 in Los Angeles; and extended improv sessions on beloved Dead staples from throughout the band’s career.
It’s unclear whether this new playlist is intended to complement or replace the Dead’s customary holiday “yule log,” but feel free to play it over a video of a cozy, burning fireplace.
