Ordinarily known for their bone-shattering post-punk fury, IDLES took things down a notch on their latest single “Grace”. The track is the second single to appear from the Bristol, U.K. band’s upcoming album, TANGK, out February 16th.
Building on the LCD Soundsystem influence of the lead single “Dancer” (which featured James Murphy and Nancy Whang), “Grace” employs similar signs of art-rock minimalism. IDLES has shouted its way into the public consciousness thanks to the ferocity of frontman Joe Talbot‘s sing-talk style, but in “Grace” he delivers his message with a vulnerability and subtlety reminiscent of previous self-examinations like “June” from 2018’s Joy as an Act of Resistance. and “Slow Savage” from the band’s 2017 full-length debut Brutalism. The result is a different emotional rawness from Talbot and IDLES, one that is in line with the lyricist’s stated purpose for the band’s fifth album.
“The song came from nowhere and everything. It was a breath and a call to be held,” Talbot said. “The only words or singing that came from our sessions with Nigel [Godrich, TANGK co-producer] and I needed it, truly. All is love.”

Ahead of the band’s follow-up to 2021’s Grammy-nominated CRAWLER, IDLES recently announced a new run of North American tour dates. The tour will begin in May 2024 and include dates throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico stretching into September. Tickets go on sale on Friday at 9 a.m. local time, but those who pre-order TANGK can get access to a pre-sale.
“TANGK. I needed love. So I made it,” Talbot said of the album. “I gave love out to the world and it feels like magic. This is our album of gratitude and power. All love songs. All is love.”
