Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chest, NY for a three-night run celebrating the music of the Grateful Dead, but the band didn’t pigeonhole themselves with just a single songbook, instead debuting several covers including songs by The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Screaming Trees, and Them.
Night one (Friday, January 12th) saw the band kick things off with Bob Dylan‘s “Tangled Up in Blue” and bust out “Passenger” for the first time since 2016. The second set featured the band’s debut of “Nearly Lost You” by Screaming Trees and “Shattered” by The Rolling Stones (with Dave Dreiwitz on lead vocals), as well as copious teases including “Let It Grow” (in “Uncle John’s Band”), “Terrapin Station” (in “Saint of Circumstance”), and Led Zeppelin‘s “Stairway to Heaven” (in “Slipknot”).

The bust-outs and debuts continued on night two with Neil Young‘s “Vampire Blues”, revived for the first time since June 2022, and ZZ Top’s “La Grange”, played by the band for the first time ever before a second set-closing “Shakedown Street”. For the encore, another new cover, “Gloria” by Van Morrison‘s band Them.

For night three, JRAD went back to the Dead’s Pigpen era, opening with “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl”, followed by “Let it Grow”, which they had teased in two separate songs on Friday. The remainder of the setlist stuck to a Dead-centric repertoire, with the exception of the encore comprised of Tom Petty’s “Running Down a Dream”.
