As winter settles in across the country, jAmericana-grass ensemble The High Hawks take flight for warmer climates on their latest single, “Somewhere South”. Premiering exclusively through Live For Live Music, “Somewhere South” follows “Diamond Sky” as the second single from the band’s upcoming sophomore album Mother Nature’s Show, out February 16th.
Established in 2019, The High Hawks features Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Chad Staehly (Great American Taxi), Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra), and Will Trask (Great American Taxi). The band is a Frankenstein’s monster of a roots outfit, blending the best parts of Herman’s weathered-yet-inviting vocal delivery, Carbone’s rustic fiddle chops, Staehly’s color palette of keys, Gruel’s foundational guitar work, and the rock solid rhythm section of drummer Will Task and bassist Brian Adams. Together, they create a single organism that defies categorization of either bluegrass, Americana, or folk-rock, but is instead the missing link in the evolution of American roots music.
On “Somewhere South”, Herman sings about those high country winds and longs for a place where the climate suits his clothes. As he shifts to a sunnier disposition, Herman conjures up warm images of “Panama, Mexico, maybe the Keys” where worries about the weather melt away and sink their toes into this carefree beachfront singalong.
In the video directed by Carbone himself, The High Hawks earn their snowbird wings. Herman shovels snow up in Girdwood, AK—shot when the band was up north playing the Alyeska Resort—as he dreams of better weather, only to manifest his fantasies as he galavants on the beach with Carbone while in Puerto Morales, Mexico for Strings & Sol.
“‘Somewhere South’ was captured by Aaron Ratiere, Ben Chapman, and I sitting on a Nashville porch on a fine summer day,” Herman said of the song. “Thinking about beaches and escaping that high country cold when you need to. Who can argue with that?!?”
