The Disco Biscuits have released the first of four audiovisual installments in the rollout of their ninth full-length album, Revolution in Motion, due to be released on March 29th, 2024. The ambitious new cosmic-fantasy concept piece, deemed a “space opera” by fans, will mark the trance-fusion stalwarts’ first full-length studio set in more than a decade.
Revolution in Motion, categorized by the band as “music aliens would love,” will mark the third rock opera in the band’s arsenal (following Barber’s 1998’s Hot Air Balloon and Brownstein’s 2000 Chemical Warfare Brigade, which he first debuted with Electron). It tells the story of an alien species set out to discover and study other life throughout the universe. After partying a little too hard and losing track of their mission, the aliens slip through space in a wormhole and arrive on Earth. Vowing to complete their mission, the aliens set out to abduct and study humans with only The Disco Biscuits able to save their own world—and possibly the aliens’ world, as well.
While the four tracks included in Revolution in Motion, Pt. 1 (“Shocked!”, “Twisted in the Road”, “The Wormhole”, “Another Plan of Attack”) have all been previously released as singles, this first official chunk of the album arrives alongside a nearly seven-minute, comic book-style animated film by Blunt Action. Set to a medley of the four tracks, the new visuals introduce viewers to characters, settings, and concepts from the project including “the world of Pol yfuzia, Fuzzies, Space Trains, royal family drama, and the inevitable Freeze of Times Square to come.”
Jon “Barber” Gutwillig (guitar, lead vocals) initially conceptualized Revolution in Motion with friend and collaborator Joey Friedman in August 2021. The pair began writing songs for the album in early 2022 with Aron Magner (keys, vocals) and the band—which also features Marc Brownstein (bass) and Allen Aucoin (drums)—debuted all fourteen of them live as they were completed.
“The underlying theme is ‘Another Plan of Attack’,” Barber said of the project. “Sometimes in life things are going one way when something very unexpected happens and presents an opportunity. You can turn the other way and continue doing what you were before, or you can lean into this opportunity and achieve things you never thought were possible.”
Added Friedman, “The Disco Biscuits are a band with so much potential, they just had to go to outer space to reach it.”
