Gov’t Mule kicked off its 14th Island Exodus on Sunday, welcoming fans to the Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica with a reggae interpretation of Black Sabbath‘s “Iron Man”.

After the sun set on the golden sand beaches of Runaway Bay, Mule came out for a second set that featured the locally-influenced take on the Paranoid classic. In this version, bassist Kevin Scott handled the riff that every aspiring rock star learns before even leaving the Guitar Center, while guitarist Warren Haynes chopped up a skanking reggae riddim. A far cry from the headbanging metal staple, this version was patient and relaxed as it eventually morphed into Mule original “Reblow Your Horn” from the band’s 2007 reggae album Mighty High. Organist Danny Louis pulled double duty on keys and trombone before Haynes brought it back around to “Iron Man” to finish off the cover.

Gov’t Mule has long held reverence for reggae and Black Sabbath alike. On New Year’s Eve 2006, the band welcomed reggae icon Toots Hibbert for a full set at New York’s Beacon Theatre, later released on the live album Dub Side of the Mule. On the heavier side, Mule covered Sabbath’s iconic 1970 sophomore album Paranoid in full for the band’s 2018 Halloween show in Atlanta.

Watch Gov’t Mule put a reggae spin on Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” at Island Exodus 14. Mule will return to domestic stages beginning February 8th in Vancouver, kicking off a run of shows in the Western United States and the beginning of the band’s 30th-anniversary tour.
