Google is finally ready to take on ChatGPT. Google Bard is no more—it’s now Gemini, and much like ChatGPT, it offers a free app and website where you can ask questions and get AI responses in return. But that’s not all: Google now has a new tier, called Gemini Advanced, that goes right up against ChatGPT Plus.
Gemini Advanced with its Ultra 1.0 AI model
Gemini is now the singular name for all of Google’s AI offerings: It’s the name of their AI model and their consumer-facing product. The free version runs on Pro 1.0 (previously Gemini Pro), but the new Gemini Advanced offers Google’s best AI model, Ultra 1.0, which you can get with a $19.99-per-month Google One AI Premium plan. This subscription comes with 2TB of cloud storage, all the benefits of a Google One subscription, and access to Gemini Ultra. Compared to ChatGPT Plus, purely in terms of value, the Google One plan does make for a better deal. And right now, Google is offering a two-month free trial. Soon, you will be able to use Gemini AI features in Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and Gemini Advanced will be available in more than 150 countries. All eyes on Gemini
ChatGPT Plus’s GPT 4.0 model is established as the leader in AI space. It handles everything from writing code to working with plugins. Gemini is Google’s answer.
Gemini Advanced should be more capable than Bard when it comes to advanced tasks like following a nuanced set of instructions, logical reasoning, coding, and also as a creative collaborator. According to Google’s press release, Gemini Advanced also lets you have longer and more detailed conversations with the bot, and is much better at understanding context from the previous prompts. (If Google is to be believed, this is a big improvement compared to Bard).
Google is pitching Gemini as a collaborator for your creative and work projects, and as a way to help you brainstorm different types of creative ideas or to help come up with various solutions. For example, Gemini can help you with advanced coding problems by serving as a sound board for your ideas and offering advice on solving them. It can provide contextual feedback on your approaches, keep track of them, and help you evaluate the results of different coding approaches.
Similarly, if you’re a content creator, Google says Gemini can help you create fresh content from scratch. With its connection to Google Search, Gemini can analyze current trends, which could help you brainstorm ideas that are more likely to grow your audience.
Of course, today is still day one for Gemini, so time will tell how much it lives up to these promises.
