Sure, Karina Rykman has played with Phish at Madison Square Garden (albeit during soundcheck, but still). And sure, Phish bassist Mike Gordon has sat in with her at Nectar’s. But those musical achievements pale in comparison to what happened Thursday night on Late Night with Seth Meyers when Karina Rykman jammed with Seinfeld co-creator Larry David on national television.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm curmudgeon was on the talk show begrudgingly plugging the allegedly final season of his landmark HBO sitcom. Rather than promoting his show, however, the Social Assassin instead chose to immediately lay into the Seth Meyers’ house band, The 8G Band, with whom Rykman is playing guitar this week.
“Really, the drums, is that that hard? You don’t think I can do that,” David asked as soon as he sat down.
Challenged by Meyers, David doubled down and insisted he could absolutely play the drums. Brimming with undeserved boomer confidence, he told newly installed 8G Band drummer Colleen Clark to take five and had the rest of the band launch into an instrumental vamp. In a style best described as a chimpanzee imitating Led Zeppelin‘s “Moby Dick”, David immediately paid a physical price for his hubris as he could only withstand a few seconds of drumming a freeform beat on Meyers’ desk. All the while, David made a series of facial contortions that seemed to indicate he discovered in real-time just how hard drumming actually is.
“Even if it was just as good as her, which it wasn’t,” Meyers said, defending his house band, “I wouldn’t have you here from the face you made. The face you made, even if it was great drumming, would not be acceptable in the studio.”

This is not Rykman’s first notable on-air celebrity interaction on Late Night. Back in November 2022, Rykman’s guest stint with The 8G Band resulted in a memorable exchange when Saturday Night Live alum Tracy Morgan tried to buy her guitar from her in the middle of his interview. Given that Larry David went on in Thursday’s interview to express his disdain for guitarists, no similar business propositions were made on last night’s show.
“That was just insane,” Ryman told Live For Live Music about the Larry David jam. “I could care less about ‘celebrities’ but I think I care more about Larry David than I would if Eddie Vedder, Springsteen, and Beyoncé were on that couch, together.”
