After adding three Grammy nominations to his growing list of accolades, Billy Strings walked away from Sunday’s ceremony empty-handed, but the bluegrass phenom made the most of the evening strolling the red carpet with his dad and collaborator, Terry Barber.
Among Strings’ nominations were Best American Roots Song for “California Sober”, his collaboration with Willie Nelson, Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “High Note” by Dierks Bentley, and Best Bluegrass Album for Me/And/Dad, which he made in collaboration with his father.

“It’s the most incredible thing to be nominated for the record that I made with my dad,” Strings told Billboard in a red carpet interview before the ceremony. “I’m so honored to be able to bring him here and to put that bluegrass music out there. No one does it like him.”
Asked what it was like to make an album with his son, Barber replied, “Fantastic, very fantastic. I’m amazed.” And asked what he would do if they won, he answered, “Cry.”

In another red carpet interview posted to SiriusXM’s Instagram stories, Barber reflected on when he knew his son had a gift for music: “He grew up listening, and I noticed one day in his high chair the rhythm of his hands. I goes, ‘He’s gonna be something.’”
Billy bashfully turned the spotlight back on his dad, crediting him instead of accepting the praise. “He taught me everything I know and it’s really cool for me to be able to kinda give back to him and take him to this event and to just honor him because I have everything I have because of him. That’s what today’s all about.”
Finally, asked who he was excited to bump elbows with on the red carpet, Barber knew his answer: Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel.
