The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced the slate of 2024 nominees up for consideration for induction. The list includes a bevy of first-time nominees from across the musical spectrum.
The 2024 Rock Hall nominees are: metal icon Ozzy Osbourne, roots rock jam band Dave Matthews Band, Britpop posterboys Oasis, ubiquitous guitarist Lenny Kravitz, chart-topping singer-songwriter Mariah Carey, pop fixture Cher, late Irish alt-pop star Sinéad O’Connor, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J Blige, R&B legends Kool & The Gang, alt-rock hellraisers Jane’s Addiction, hip-hop pioneers Eric B. & Rakim, classic rock hitmakers Foreigner, guitar hero Peter Frampton, hip-hop OGs A Tribe Called Quest, and English sophisti-pop outfit Sade.
One of the only real qualifications to enter the Rock Hall is for a band or artist to have released their first commercial recording 25 years prior to induction. Many of the nominees are making their first appearances on the ballot despite years of eligibility, particularly Cher who has been eligible for induction since 1991. Other surprising first-timers on the ballot include Frampton, Foreigner, Kool & The Gang, and Ozzy, who was inducted into the Hall in 2006 as a member of Black Sabbath. Oasis, Carey, O’Connor, Sade, and Kravitz are all also making their first appearances on the ballot.
This marks the second nomination for Blige, Eric B. & Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, and DMB and the third for A Tribe Called Quest. The final list of inductees will be decided upon by a voting body of over 1,000 “artists, historians and members of the music industry,” per a press release. Fans can also cast their vote here. The Rock Hall will announce the inductees in late April.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will return to Cleveland, the home of the body’s headquarters, this fall. Once again, the institution will partner with Disney+ to livestream the ceremonies, with an edited TV broadcast airing on ABC at a later date and available to stream on Hulu.
