The String Cheese Incident opened up the vault on Friday to share the Lend Me A Hand bonus track “Windy Mountain”. The song was left off the band’s 2023 folk-inspired disc, Cheese’s first full-length studio release in six years.

Singer/guitarist Bill Nershi strums the gentle tune, inspired by an actual cabin the frontman lived in atop a windy mountain in Boulder, CO. Painting a vividly comforting picture of going up the country, Nershi’s lyrics are accented by Kyle Hollingsworth‘s delicate piano flourishes and a percussive color palette from rhythm duo Jason Hann and Michael Travis that gives depth to the sonic canvas.

“I actually lived in a miner’s cabin in a little town above Boulder with my family for a couple of years,” Nershi said in a press release.  “It was built in the 1890s. The old spirits still reside there. They gave me the gift of this song.”

Though the song has been in Cheese’s live rotation since 2001, the general tone of “Windy Mountain” fits idyllically with the songwriting-oriented Lend Me A Hand. After 30 years of building a reputation as a live tour de force bridging elements of rock, bluegrass, EDM, reggae, and more, The String Cheese Incident rededicated itself to songcraft on its latest album. The poignant 11-track album reflects on the band members’ passing age, their dearly departed friend and manager Jesse Aratow, and the wisdom of experience they have yielded from their three decades together.

“Someone told me recently, gratitude is the grease that keeps the wheels of life turning,” bassist Keith Moseley told Live For Live Music in a recent interview, “and I keep coming back to that as kind of a mantra because I think it’s really true. I think that the gratitude keeps you in check and keeps you in a good place mentally and emotionally, and it’s just a good reality check.”
