Though known for his contributions to the bluegrass and jam world, Billy Strings continued to beef up his heavy metal resume over the weekend by jamming with Michigan metalcore band Flesh and Blood Robot.
Following high-profile sit-ins with progressive metal band Tool, Strings initially shared a video of himself shredding along with the Flesh and Blood Robot, who recently announced their first show in 18 years at Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, MI. The band released its debut album in 2004, The Sounds That Revolvers Make, before disbanding, with vocalist Chris Fox going on to join See You Next Tuesday.
Billy Strings later announced he would sit in with Flesh and Blood Robot at the intimate 420-capacity club, which is located just a short walk from the 12,000-cap Van Andel Arena, where Strings delivered a sold-out, wrestling-themed Halloween extravaganza last October.
Strings wielded an electric axe in what must have felt like a throwback to his days playing in the metalcore band To Once Darkened Skies as a teenager growing up in the small town of Muir, MI. He showcased his shredding chops during the 45-minute set with one of the seven bands performing that evening, all leading up to a headlining set by Ohio’s From a Second Story Window. Afterward, he stuck around to visit with old friends and take selfies with fans in the parking lot.
“Last night was a complete celebration,” Strings wrote in a social media post after the show. “It was so great to re-unite with some of my best friends I haven’t seen in years!! So many homies from GR, Ionia , Muir & Lyons were in the house. @super_nuclear was there running lights!! It was a straight-up heavy metal reunion and a flashback to the mid 00’s. Seeing @heartsickband , @cunexttuesdaygrind , @fromasecondstorywindow all playing together after all this time was so nostalgic and refreshing. The energy in the room was fast and thick. Sweaty and poignant. I want to thank @fleshandbloodrobotmetal for asking me to be a part of this show. I have loved this band since I was like 12 and to see them play after 18 years was just incredible, especially from where I was standing. They never skipped a beat. These fellas were my first ‘big brothers’ in a band who I really looked up to.. and who I saw and thought ‘I could do that someday’ ….. my neck hurts. But it was soo worth it. This was fucking AWESOME!!!! #fleshandbloodrobot”
