Dogs In A Pile gave audiences in Venice, CA a taste of some classic ’60s R&B on Wednesday with their debut of Booker T. & The MG’s instrumental “Green Onions”. The cover arrived during the band’s second of two sets at The Venice West.

Wednesday’s show was full of cheeky setlist antics by the fast-rising New Jersey jam five-piece. In the first set, the band had two “Johnnys” (“Look Johnny”, “Look Johnny II”), two “Days” (“Today”, “Snow Day”), two “Blues” (Grateful Dead deep cut “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” > “Blues For Brian”), and two “Stranges” (“Strangest Dreams” > “Bent Strange”). The shenanigans continued in the second set, with two “Fours” (“4th of July” > “Four More Days”), two “Songs”(“G Song” > Ben Folds‘ “Song For The Dumped”), two “Apples” (“Appleseed” > “Applesauce”), two “Greens” (“Green Earrings” > Booker T.’s “Green Onions”) and finally two cocktails (“Jack & Coke” > “Trunk Rum”). The Dogs In A Pile cover of “Green Onions”, one of the most famous R&B instrumentals of all time, brought back a rush of memories of the 1960s or maybe the 1993 classic The Sandlot—depending on when you grew up.
