African-Australian artist Elsy Wameyo has shared her second new single of 2024, entitled ‘Piny Lara’. Its title stems from the song’s chorus, which is sung by the song’s co-producer Wuod Omollo in Luo – a language spoken in several dialects across Africa, including her native Kenya. The singer and rapper revealed when sharing the song that “Piny lara, Kayuda man malo lemona” roughly translates into English as: “the world hates me, but the Lion of Judah intercedes on my behalf”.
In a press statement, Wameyo says that the song describes feeling “as though the enemy has tied ropes to your arms and legs, tearing you apart”. “[It’s] the feeling of a world that wants to consume you,” she adds. To accompany the release of the single, a music video has been shared for it. The clip was co-directed by Danny Skilton with Wameyo herself. It can be viewed below.

‘Piny Lara’ follows on from the release of ‘Sinner’ in late January – which itself followed ‘Make Way’, Wameyo’s 2023 collaboration with producer Motez. The Adelaide-based artist released her debut EP, Nilotic, in April of 2022.
This weekend, Wameyo will perform at two festivals across two different states. On Saturday (March 9), she will perform at the 2024 instalment of A Festival Called Panama in the Lone Star Valley of Tasmania. The following day, she will head to Meredith in Victoria to perform at this year’s edition of Golden Plains alongside Black Country, New Road, King Stingray and The Streets.
Wameyo also has two headlining shows slotted for later this month: a hometown show at The Lab in Adelaide on Friday March 22nd, and a Sydney show at the Oxford Art Factory‘s Gallery Bar on Saturday March 23rd. Cazeaux O.S.L.O will support at the former show, while Munasib will open the latter. Tickets for both shows are on sale now via Wameyo’s official website.
