Tenacious D, the comedic, rock-evangelizing project let by Jack Black and Kyle Gass, brings unexpected life to an unlikely pop classic with a new cover of “…Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. Out now on streaming platforms, the Tenacious D version of Britney’s 1998 debut single is due to appear in the closing credits of the newly released Kung Fu Panda 4, which once again stars Black as the voice of Po, the titular bear/martial arts master. The cover will also appear on the film’s forthcoming soundtrack album.
A video for the cover—a relatively reverent recreation of the original led by Black with his patented so-ridiculous-it’s-actually-sort-of-sincere charisma—depicts Black and Gass performing a shortened version of the song (in addition to various punches and kicks) at a recent Kung Fu Panda 4 premiere event. Various notable KFP4 cast members also make cameos in the video, from Dustin Hoffman to Bryan Cranston.

As Jack Black told reporters of the Britney Spears cover at the L.A. premiere, per People, “So, people don’t know … I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say. I’m just going to give you the scoop, but the director said, ‘Hey. We’d love to have a Tenacious D song … at the end credits. Will you do a song?’ … I was like, ‘Can we do Britney Spears?’ And he was like, ‘Yes.’” He added that they chose “…Baby One More Time” in particular because it seemed to fit the film’s Kung Fu aesthetic.
The cover is performed by Tenacious D, which features Black and Gass alongside John Spiker (who produced and mixed the track), John Konesky, and Scott Seiver.
